Kathleen Lawler Row, a former professor in the Department of Psychology, passed away Saturday at the age of 66.
Row’s career at the university spanned more than thirty years during which she taught courses in child psychology, positive psychology, and the psychology of religion. Her research focused on health psychology, earning her national recognition for her work. She received the University Studies Award in 2003 for outstanding contribution to interdisciplinary studies and the Chancellor’s Award in 2002 for research and creative achievement.
Row served on the university’s Commission on Women, Curriculum Review Committee, and Promotion and Tenure Committee, including a three-year term as chairman.
In 2006 she left Knoxville to continue her career as head of the Department of Psychology at East Carolina University and oversee the creation of a new doctoral program in health psychology. When she retired in 2012, the department renamed its annual graduate student research award in her honor.

A funeral service will take place at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, September 26, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church located at 401 East Fourth Street in Greenville, North Carolina. A memorial service honoring her life will be held at 4:00 p.m. Friday, October 4, also at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
