KNOXVILLE — Dougherty Engineering Building has now reopened after a fire in a laboratory this morning. The UT Police Department received a report of a fire involving magnesium which began in a lab on a lower floor of the building at about 9:15 a.m. today. A staff member extinguished the fire with a Class D fire extinguisher.

The Knoxville Fire Department responded and helped to clear the smoke and to assess the situation. Access to The Hill was limited due to the emergency response involving the Knoxville Fire Department and other responders, due to the potential hazards involving the magnesium.

There are no reported injuries and less than 20 people were evacuated from Dougherty. No other buildings were evacuated.

There are no classes today or tomorrow due to fall break.
