Wes HinesWes Hines, UT Knoxville professor of nuclear engineering, has been named interim vice chancellor for research and engagement. His appointment is effective immediately.

“Wes is an outstanding professor and has served the university well over the last 15 years, including time spent as an interim associate dean for the College of Engineering,” said Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek. “He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this position, and I appreciate his willingness to serve.”

Hines served as interim associate dean for research and technology for the College of Engineering from 2008 to 2009. A UT faculty member since 1995, he has received numerous awards for research and creative achievement and teaching from the university as well as his external peers.

He received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Ohio University in 1985. In 1992 Hines received a master’s degree in nuclear engineering and a master’s of business administration from Ohio State University. He earned his doctorate in nuclear engineering from Ohio State University in 1994. Hines also attended the Naval Nuclear Power School in Orlando, Fla., in 1986 and worked as a U.S. Naval Officer on nuclear submarines from 1987 to 1990.

The university will conduct a national search to fill the permanent post. Provost Susan Martin will chair the search committee.
