Carol Tenopir

KNOXVILLE — Carol Tenopir, a University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Chancellor’s Professor in the School of Information Sciences and director of the College of Communication and Information’s Center for Information and Communication Studies, has been awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Tenopir earned her doctorate from the university’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS).

Each year this award is given to a GSLIS alumnus who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of library and information science. Tenopir was honored for her work in the areas of information access and retrieval, electronic publishing, the information industry, online resources and the impact of technology on reference librarians and scientists.

“Receipt of this award, from the University of Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information Science, provides further confirmation that Carol Tenopir is among the world’s top library and information scientists,” said Mike Wirth, dean of UT Knoxville’s College of Communication and Information. “We are very fortunate to have her on our faculty.”

Tenopir’s GSLIS doctoral dissertation was one of the first to study full-text journal article retrieval. Tenopir said it was an honor to receive the award.

“I am proud to be a graduate of GSLIS and incredible honored to receive its distinguished alumni award,” Tenopir said. “I still keep in touch with the professors there, and several of the program’s Ph.D. graduates are colleagues of mine here at UT.”
