The 3.5-day Summer School in Biophysics at UT-ORNL kicks off on Wednesday, July 7, on the fourth floor of the UT Conference Center in downtown Knoxville.

The summer school targets senior undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in physics, mathematics, computer science, chemistry, materials sciences and other “exact sciences,” who are interested in considering biosciences as a future career direction. The goal is to expose participants to research opportunities at the interface of biological, physical and computational sciences.

Registration for the full conference, with meals, will be available at the door for $250. UT faculty, staff and students are invited to drop in on individual lectures without paying.

Confirmed keynote speakers include some leading scientists from around the world. Among the speakers and their topics: Ruben Abagyan, “Challenges in Chemogenomics and Structure Based Drug Discovery;” Robert Eisenberg, “Ions in Water and Proteins: the Liquid of Life; Maxim Frank-Kamenetskii, “Targeting Duplex DNA: Strategies and Applications;” Zaida (Zan) Luthey-Schulten, “Simulations and Visualization of Dynamics in RNA: Protein Complexes;” Lucy Malinina, “Protein-based Structural Biomedicine;” Andrew McCulloch, “Multi-Scale Modeling and Systems Biology of the Heart;” and Edward Trifonov, “30 Years of Nucleosome Positioning Agony, and Finale.”

The program begins at 9 a.m. Wednesday. A full schedule of the program, as well as details about the speakers, can be found at http://biophysics.ornl.gov/program.html.
