KNOXVILLE –- In an effort to remind students and others of basic safety practices, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is hosting “Safety Days” in the Fort Sanders neighborhood and at Sutherland Village Apartments.

In Fort Sanders, the event will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 3. At Sutherland Village, it will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4.

In Fort Sanders, UT Police, Knoxville Police, students, UT officials and neighborhood representatives will staff tents and distribute safety information, refreshments and freebies. At Sutherland Village, UT police, UT officials and others will staff a tent.

Tent locations in Fort Sanders are:
• The pedestrian bridge beside the 11th Street Parking Garage.
• The corner of White Avenue and James Agee.
• The corner of 16th Street and Highland Avenue, behind the Laurel Avenue Parking Garage.
• The corner of 17th Street and White Avenue, at the White Avenue Parking Garage.
• The vacant lot in front of the Lake Avenue Parking Garage.

A tent will be set up on the grounds at Sutherland Village.

In addition, Fort Sanders and Sutherland Village residents, as well as commuters who use parking garages in Fort Sanders, will see safety posters and door hangers going up throughout the area.

Fort Sanders is adjacent to campus and is not UT property, but many students, faculty and staff live in houses and apartments there. Sutherland Village is UT property located on Sutherland Avenue, away from campus.

Several crimes, some targeting students, recently have occurred in both Fort Sanders and Sutherland Village.

Police said the overall number of crimes has declined in the area this year, but robberies have increased.

UT and Knoxville police have increased patrols in the Fort Sanders area near campus. The additional patrols began Nov. 12 and will continue indefinitely.
