UT Graphic Arts Service

The University of Tennessee Graphic Arts Service (GAS) recently won top honors from In-plant Printing and Mailing Association for its digital printing quality.

GAS submitted their Innovative Computing Laboratory Report booklet to the contest and was notified by phone that they had won a gold award.

Co-sponsored by IPMA and In-Plant Graphics magazine, the 2007 competition consisted of 550 submissions from all over the nation. Of these 550, only 88 winners were selected and just 42 received a gold award.

Gary Williford, GAS director, received the award at the annual awards banquet held in Oklahoma City. He said he enjoyed seeing the different printed pieces that were submitted to the contest.

"Everyone was really proud that we won the award," said Williford. "We print a lot of stuff – we never really have entered these contests. Next year, we’re planning on submitting multiple entries."

Winners also were featured in the July edition of the In-Plant Graphics magazine.

Digital printing is fairly new to Graphic Arts Service, and they have become experts at performing high-resolution color separations. Done only in-house, digital color proofs are used on job orders with four-color process images. Files may be sent across the campus network or converted from CD, floppy disk or Zip disk.

Graphic Arts Service employs more than 40 people who provide the university with printing and duplication services.
