UT To Host Second Annual Black Issues Conference
KNOXVILLE — In celebration of Black History Month, the Office of Minority Student Affairs at the University of Tennessee will host the second annual Black Issues Conference on Feb. 10.
The conference, “The State of the Black Union,” will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Carolyn P. Brown University Center. The event is free and open to the public.
This year’s conference will include keynote speaker Jeff Johnson, BET television personality, motivational speaker and political activist.
Johnson has served as the national youth director for the NAACP and worked as a senior advisor for media and youth outreach at People for the American Way. Currently he is co-host of the Black Entertainment Television show “Chop Up,” and an international correspondent for the network.
UT students started the conference last year to address issues in the black community and educate others.
The conference will feature 18 workshops led by community members, university professors and business representatives. Topics include Fighting Racial Issues: Then and Now; AIDS in Black America; Diversity in the Workforce and Stress and the College Student.
The Black Issues Conference is sponsored by the NAACP-UT chapter, Minority Student Affairs, Career Services, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Target Corporation, 21st Mortgage, UT’s Black Cultural Programming Committee and UT Africana Studies Department.
