KNOXVILLE — More than 100 lawyers, advertising professionals, faculty and students from across the nation are expected here Oct. 18 at a University of Tennessee conference on legal issues in advertising.

The Advertising Law Conference 2002, set for 8:45 a.m. in the University Center Shiloh Room, is sponsored by UT’s College of Law and the Advertising Department in UT’s College of Communications and Information Sciences.

The event will feature panel discussions on many controversial advertising issues, including the First Amendment and controversial product advertising, privacy, Federal Trade Commission advertising disclosures, and direct-to-consumer prescription drug advertising.

“We are very excited about participating in this important interdisciplinary program,” Tom Galligan, UT law professor and dean, said. “It is of tremendous benefit to lawyers and to advertising professionals.”

Dr. Ron Taylor, UT professor and head of advertising, said the conference brings diverse viewpoints on different topics.

“Our direct-to-consumer prescription drug advertising panel has representatives from the Food and

Dr. Ron Taylor

Drug Administration, a law faculty member who specializes in health care law, the dean of the UT College of Pharmacy and a lobbyist for the American Advertising Federation,” Taylor said. “Each of these panelists has a slightly different perspective on the value and potential harm of DTC advertising.”

The conference is approved by the Tennessee Bar Association for continuing legal education credit. It is designed for faculty, students and legal and advertising professionals, but it is open to the public. Admission is free. Registration is nearly full, but limited seating is available.
