KNOXVILLE — A University of Tennessee engineering major has been recognized as the nation’s top aerospace engineering student.
Yvonne Jones, a senior from White Pine, Tenn., has been named winner of the 2002 Ammon S. Andes National Award from Sigma

Gamma Tau, the national honor society of aerospace engineering.
The award, which goes annually to the society’s top student, is named for the longtime professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Kansas. Andes was an active member of Sigma Gamma Tau. He died in 1996.
“Yvonne is an outstanding student who will certainly be a successful engineer,” Dr. Fred Tompkins, UT acting dean of engineering, said. “We are extremely proud of her accomplishments. She is very deserving of this award.”
Jones also was selected as the southeastern regional recipient, one of seven finalists chosen for regional honors. She will receive an honorarium of $250, a certificate and a plaque documenting the award.
Jones has been working as a co-op student with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration facility in Hampton, Va., since her sophomore year.
In April 2001, a paper she co-authored with NASA researchers was presented at the National Conference of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronauts in Seattle.
