Honorary Degree Awarded to Alumna, Gensler Exec

For Robin Klehr Avia—now regional managing principal of one of the world’s leading architectural firms—being on stage at the College of Architecture and Design commencement ceremony filled a gap missing from her life for forty years. Having missed her own graduation ceremony because of family issues, she finally walked the stage during the UT commencement ceremony on Friday, May 13, as she shook hands with Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek and was awarded an honorary doctorate of fine arts. More than 4,800 students graduated from the university's eleven colleges and the Graduate School last week during four days of ceremonies and special events. Read more...

Claussen's Story Touches Community, Draws Media Coverage
On Saturday, Makayla Claussen received a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences. During her sophomore year, Claussen was diagnosed with secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and stage four non-Hodgkin’s T-cell lymphoma. Four months after her diagnosis, Claussen received a stem cell transplant from a donor in Germany—a one in 27 million match. The transplant saved her life and she was able to return to UT several months later. Her story struck a chord with the community and local media outlets were on campus before her graduation to capture the moment she met Claudia Reverts, the donor whose stem cells saved her life. >>Video Read more...

Section of Volunteer Boulevard to Completely Close for the Summer
A section of Volunteer Boulevard between UT Drive and Pat Head Summitt Street will be closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic this summer for the first phase of a new project to remake the street into a more pedestrian-friendly thoroughfare. Closures of the street and sidewalks will begin the morning of Sunday, May 29. All sidewalks and traffic lanes will reopen by Friday, Aug. 12. Read more...

Veterans Resource Team Offers Poppies
The Veterans Resource Team will distribute 1,000 Buddy Poppies for faculty, staff and students to wear the week preceding Memorial Day, May 23-27. Last year, the group gave out 800 poppies with more than 500 additional requests. Read more...

Citizen Science Symposium at the UT Gardens
UT Gardens will present a daylong learning experience, Citizen Science in the Gardens, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, June 18. Organizers will show citizen scientists in East Tennessee how they can make significant contributions to programs such as the Great Sunflower Project, Monarch monitoring, and Project BudBurst.
