Miracle Makayla: Graduate Defies Death to Finish Degree

When death came knocking, all Makayla Claussen could think about was living long enough to earn her college degree. On Saturday, Claussen will achieve her goal. She will receive a bachelor's degree in kinesiology from the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences. Claussen’s steep climb to graduation and the drive she has demonstrated to get there will make Saturday’s ceremony cause for a Big Orange celebration. Read more...

ORNL Director, FedEx Founder Awarded Honorary Degrees
A physicist and a business leader received honorary degrees from UT on Thursday and today and spoke to some of the university’s newest graduates, challenging them to be innovators—in their careers and in their lives. Thom Mason, director of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, received an honorary doctorate in science during the graduate hooding ceremony on Thursday, and Fred Smith, founder, chairman and CEO of FedEx Corporation, received an honorary doctorate in business at the Haslam College of Business commencement ceremony today. Tonight, the university will award its third honorary degree of this spring commencement season to Robin Klehr Avia, regional managing principal and executive committee chair of the board of directors for Gensler. New Grad Earns UT Architecture Degree While Also Completing ROTC
Studying architecture is demanding. Studying architecture while being in the ROTC is—pun intended—a military regimen. Vice Chancellor for Communications Finalists to Visit Campus, Hold Forums

Two finalists for vice chancellor for communications will visit campus next week. The finalists are Robbin Morrison Taylor, vice president of public affairs at Western Kentucky University, and Stephen P. Ward, executive director of university communications at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Forums for the campus community will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, and Thursday, May 19. Read more...

Facilities Services to Begin Moving to Sutherland Avenue

Moving day for the Facilities Services department is May 16. Workers will begin moving to the new building, a renovated industrial complex at 2000 Sutherland Avenue, east of Concord Street. Construction at the site began in June 2014. Read more...

Students Provide Nearly 5,000 Hours of Nonprofit Consulting

Graduate students from UT’s Haslam College of Business contributed 4,624 consulting hours to area nonprofit and governmental organizations this semester. The students, who are pursuing a Master of Business Administration, worked free of charge as part of the college’s Innovation in Practice capstone course. After learning a consulting process in class, they formed fourteen teams and met with clients each week to identify challenges and apply problem-solving frameworks. Read more...

Culinary Program Instructors Featured in Cityview's Top Chef Spread
Chefs Deron Little and Robert Allen, instructors in UT's Culinary Program, scored high marks in the Knoxville Top Chefs competition in early April. Cityview magazine featured the chefs as part of their reporting on the event in a eighteen-page spread in a recent edition of the magazine. Also featured in the issue is an interview with the program's director Chef Greg Eisele about the farm-to-table trend and healthy eating. Read more...
