Students Craft Poems to Honor Zaevion Dobson

UT poets in an advanced undergraduate poetry class this spring poured their emotions into words, which they hope will bring solace to the mother of fifteen-year-old local high school student Zaevion Dobson. Dobson died while shielding three young girls from gunfire. The students will read their poems at 12:45 p.m. Thursday, April 28, in Room 1210 McClung Tower. The event is free and open to the public. Rupy Sawhney Recognized for Excellence in Academic Outreach
Last week, Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek celebrated faculty, staff, and students for their accomplishments throughout the past academic year. Rupy Sawhney, a Heath Fellow in Business and Engineering and a professor of industrial and systems engineering, received the Excellence in Academic Outreach award. His projects include the popular Kids U summer program "So You Want to Be an Engineer?" and the Lean Enterprise Systems Summer Program, which hosts international students in Knoxville for five weeks to strengthen participants' multicultural awareness. Light Way Celebration and Award Ceremony Caps Sexual Assault Awareness Month
The Sexual Assault Center of East Tennessee will host an open house from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Thursday, April 28. The center is at 2455 Sutherland Avenue, Building B. The Clothesline Project, made up of survivors' stories and artwork, will be displayed and attendees will celebrate the Light the Way Campaign. A trophy will be awarded to UT team who raised the most money for the campaign. Read more...

Farmers Market Kicks off Season on May 11
UT's Farmers Market will open for its seventh season at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 11. Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero will ring the opening bell. Music will be provided by the Knoxville Banjo Orchestra and children can make butterfly mosaics led by UT's Every Child Outdoors Program. Olibea chef and owner Jeff DeAlejandro will lead cooking demonstrations and Amy Francis from Barre Belle Yoga and Fitness will lead an all-levels yoga demonstration. The market will continue through the summer from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesdays. Read more...

Summer Workshop to Create Accessible Course Materials

UT's Accessibility Policy reiterates a commitment to providing and supporting a teaching and learning environment that is accessible to all. The Summer Accessibility Program is a hands-on workshop for instructional faculty. Participants will engage with students, collaborate with accessibility experts, and learn more about tools and methods used to convert course materials to meet accessibility standards. Two sessions will be held 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 6–8 and June 14–16. Read more...

Register by May 15 for Proposal Writing Institute

The 2016 Proposal Writing Institute is an intensive program designed for faculty who have a well-developed research project and have identified a target funding agency. Between June 1 and August 15, the PWI will combine workshops with proposal development support provided by the Office of Research and Engagement’s Faculty Development Team. Participants will conclude the PWI with a complete draft proposal in hand, complete with mock peer review. The registration deadline is May 15. Read more...
