Celebrating Volunteers: Silvey has 'Dogged' Desire to Help Young Readers
This week, we're celebrating National Volunteer Week with stories about faculty and staff who give of their time and talents to make a difference in our community. Donna Silvey, a communications specialist in the College of Communication and Information, has helped many area youngsters improve their reading skills. Working with Human-Animal Bond in Tennessee (HABIT), Silvey has been taking her rescued pups to area elementary schools to inspire students to read for more than seven years. Read more...

UT to Recruit Students to Study Geoscience Via NSF Grant

Within the next ten years, more than 300,000 geologists are expected to retire, creating a shortfall in the geoscience industry—and plentiful job opportunities for students in college now. UT is addressing the problem by expanding and diversifying the geoscience workforce through a new project that will attract and recruit community college students to four-year programs at UT. Students Host Tour de Knox Bike Rally April 24
Students in a service-learning class in UT’s Haslam College of Business will host the Tour de Knox bike rally from 2:00 to 4:15 p.m. Sunday, April 24, beginning at UT Parking Lot 9 at the corner of Phillip Fulmer Way and Peyton Manning Pass. Proceeds will benefit Knoxville’s Legacy Parks Foundation, which works to expand parks, create trails, and increase access to rivers in East Tennessee. Read more...

A lineup of inspirational speakers will address graduates at this spring's commencement ceremonies. Nearly 3,500 undergraduates and 1,386 graduate and professional students will participate in the ceremonies, which will include students who are completing their degrees this spring and summer. Four Students Awarded NSF Graduate Research Fellowships

Four doctoral students have been selected to be a part of the 2016 National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program. They are Benjamin Brock in computer science; Andrew Orekhov in mechanical engineering; Jayde Aufrecht in energy science and engineering; and Nicholas Coles in social psychology. Read more...
