Celebrating Volunteers: UT System Employee Helps to House, Feed Homeless
This week, we’re celebrating National Volunteer Week with stories about faculty and staff who give of their time and talents to make a difference in our community. As compliance officer for UT System's Office of Institutional Compliance, Leigh Cheek helps to ensure that all of the UT campuses are complying with regulations governing research, campus safety, students and other matters. Outside of work, Cheek helps homeless families attend to life’s essential needs—food and shelter. For nearly twenty years, Cheek has volunteered with Family Promise of Knoxville. Read more...

Sculpture Professor John Douglas Powers Named Guggenheim Fellow
John Douglas Powers, an assistant professor of sculpture, has been named a 2016 Guggenheim Fellow. Guggenheim Fellowships are highly prestigious grants awarded to scholars, artists, and scientists who have produced exceptional scholarship or creative work. Powers' work takes the form of large kinetic sculptures that can take up to a year to finish. The fellowship will allow him to take a year off from teaching to work in the studio. Read more...

Grow Bioplastics Wins Vol Court Pitch Competition

Grow Bioplastics, a startup company founded by UT students, beat fourteen competitors to win the spring 2016 Vol Court Pitch Competition hosted by UT’s Anderson Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. The Grow Bioplastics team includes Tony Bova and Jeff Beegle, both doctoral candidates with UT's Bredesen Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education. The students created a biodegradable alternative to the plastic mulch film currently used in agricultural applications. Read more...

ORNL, UT Team Up on Breakthrough That Could Aid Quantum Computing
Researchers from Oak Ridge National Laboratory and UT's Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Department of Physics and Astronomy used neutrons to uncover novel behavior in materials that holds promise for quantum computing. The findings, published in Nature Materials, provide evidence for long-sought phenomena in a two-dimensional magnet. Read more...

New York Times: Margaret Lazarus Dean to Write Astronaut Kelly's Book
The New York Times highlighted Margaret Lazarus Dean's latest project: a book in collaboration with astronaut Scott Kelly. Kelly, a UT alumnus, and Dean, professor of English, will write and publish Endurance: My Year in Space and Our Journey to Mars. The book is scheduled for publication in November 2017. Read more...
