Remembering Avon Rollins Sr.

If a single image enshrines the memory of the late Avon Rollins Sr., it's a Knoxville News Sentinel photo from May 1963 of his six-foot-four body lying on the sidewalk in front of the Tennessee Theatre as part of the effort to integrate Knoxville's movie theaters. That summer, as an executive committee member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, Rollins helped plan and carry out the March on Washington, which was capped by Martin Luther King Jr.'s historic "I Have a Dream" speech. Study to Examine the Relationship Between Grasslands and Soil Biodiversity
A new study by researchers with the Institute of Agriculture will evaluate pastures to document how management of native grasslands can enhance soil biodiversity and improve profitability. The study will be led by Patrick Keyser, director of the UT Center for Native Grasslands Management, who will work with a team of scientists that includes an entomologist, plant and animal scientists, a soils expert, and economists.
