Economics professor Don Bruce has been named UT’s new faculty athletics representative for the Southeastern Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association. In the new role, Bruce will work closely with top university administrators to support a campus environment where academics remain a central focus in college sports.

Head women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt was named head coach emeritus on Wednesday, following 38 seasons and 1,098 victories at Tennessee. Associate head coach Holly Warlick, an assistant on the Tennessee staff for 27 seasons and a three-time All-American as a player for the Lady Vols, has been named Summitt’s successor.
Tennessee Athletics has nominated diver Ryan Helms and basketball player Glory Johnson for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship, and track and field athletes Kevin Carney and Chelsea Knotts for the Brad Davis Community Service Post-Graduate Scholarship. The nominations were announced by the SEC Tuesday.
It’s baseball time in Tennessee, and Tennessee Athletics wants to remind UT employees they you can gain free entry into every home baseball game this season with a valid faculty or staff ID. Guests of faculty and staff may purchase general admission tickets at a 20 percent discount.
Seeking to give the greatest gift—a college education—Peyton and Ashley Manning have made a significant investment in the Peyton Manning Scholarship Endowment. Their generous gift will offer financial assistance to two UT students annually.
Roberta Martin, wife of Tennessee basketball head coach Cuonzo Martin, and the rest of the UT basketball staff wives are hosting a “Basketball 101” event for women Friday, October 28, at Thompson-Boling Arena. A special offer is being extended to UT women faculty and staff at a cost of $50 to attend this event. The deadline to register is Tuesday, October 25, and space is limited.
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, welcomes fans to campus Saturday. Kickoff for the Volunteers’ game against the University of Cincinnati Bearcats is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET. Gates open at 1:30 p.m. ESPN-2 will televise the game.
Tennessee Athletics wants to say thank you to all Knoxville-area faculty and staff by offering half-price tickets for the football team’s season-opener against the University of Montana on September 3.
Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek has appointed a committee to lead the search for UT Knoxville’s new athletic director. The committee will work with Parker Executive Search, a firm hired to identify, recruit, and assess candidates.
A press conference will be held at 11:00 a.m. today to announce the resignation of UT Athletic Director Mike Hamilton. The press conference will be held at Stokely Family Media Center in Neyland Stadium. Hamilton announced his resignation effective June 30, 2011. Hamilton has served as athletic director for eight years, and he has worked in the athletics department for 19 years.
