Responding to the challenge from national and state leaders to increase and encourage more innovation, the University of Tennessee helped establish nine startup companies based on technology developed by UT faculty over the last fiscal year, more than doubling the total from a year ago.

The University of Tennessee Research Foundation, the not-for-profit organization responsible for commercializing technology created by UT faculty, welcomes new leadership. Dick Gourley, former dean of the College of Pharmacy at the UT Health Science Center, is interim president of the foundation. David Washburn, assistant technology transfer director at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, will be vice president of the multi-disciplinary office based in Knoxville.
