UT Knoxville Celebrates Earth Month

April is Earth Month, and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is seeing green with a month’s worth of events to celebrate. Departments from across the campus will participate, sponsoring lectures, film screenings and other activities.

Vols Overtake Gators in RecycleMania

UT Knoxville is in its final week of Recyclemania and has overtaken its opponent Florida in per-capita recycling. To date, UT Knoxville has recycled a cumulative total of 7.89 pounds per person, while Florida has recycled a cumulative total of 7.36 pounds per person.

RecycleMania Enters Its Final Two Weeks; Totals Up Over Last Year’s

There are just three weeks left in this year’s RecycleMania and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is off to a great start! In the first five weeks, the campus has 40 percent more materials this year compared to 2010. The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, recycled more than 63,060 pounds of cardboard, paper, plastic and cans — about 1.5 pounds per full-time staff person — last year during RecycleMania.

Campus Makeover: Stimulus Funds Help Improve Buildings and Reduce Costs

Thousands of energy-saving light switches, hundreds of windows, acres of outdoor lighting, and at least 35 refurbished classrooms. That’s just a snapshot of what the UT Knoxville campus is receiving through one-time funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, more popularly known as the Stimulus Act.

UT Knoxville Environmental Coordinator Jay Price and senior Maria Rosales were interviewed by WBIR’s Robin Wilhoit about the ongoing efforts of RecycleMania, an eight-week competition among more than 630 college and university recycling programs that kicked off on Feb. 6. Price and Rosales discussed efforts such as recycling shoes at basketball games and the Paper Purge party, where everyone on campus was invited to get rid of their unwanted paper.

Next week the Paper Purge Party Crew will make the rounds on campus in an effort to top the more than 63,060 pounds of cardboard, paper, plastic and cans recycled on campus last year during RecycleMania. RecycleMania is an eight-week competition among more than 630 college and university recycling programs across the country representing 6 million students and more than 1.5 million staff and faculty.

UT Knoxville recycled more than 63,060 pounds of cardboard, paper, plastic and cans — about 1.5 pounds per full-time staff person — last year during RecycleMania. Next week, UT is hosting its second Paper Purge Party, where everyone on campus is invited to get rid of their unwanted paper.

‘Switch Your Thinking’ Continues On-Campus Energy Savings

UT Knoxville introduced the Switch Your Thinking campaign in 2008 to encourage energy conservation. Since that time, the campus’ electricity use has decreased by 10 percent. The rising summer temperatures present ample opportunity to cut energy costs and usage by adopting energy conservation practices in your offices and homes.

UT Knoxville to Host ‘Recyclympics’

In the spirit of friendly competition and going green, UT Knoxville is hosting its first-ever Recyclympics on March 19 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the TRECS Intramural Fields. Students, faculty and staff will compete in various events such as a recycled phone book shot-put, dumpster dive, aluminum can crush and recycle pong.
