Historical Note: Two Women Lead This Year’s Pride of Southland Band

When UT’s Pride of the Southland Band takes the field this fall, two women will be front and center. Junior Rebecca Percy of Trussville, Alabama, is the drum major—only the third woman to hold the position. Senior Laiton Pigg is starting her second year as assistant drum major.

Pride of the Southland to March in Its 15th Inaugural Parade

Later this month, the Pride of the Southland Band will continue an honored tradition—representing the state of Tennessee in the presidential inaugural parade in Washington, D.C. The band will march in the 58th inaugural parade on January 20, 2017. This will be the band’s 13th appearance in the parade—more than any other civilian organization. Their first parade was in 1965.

Pride of the Southland Marching Band to be on The Weather Channel

The Pride of the Southland Marching Band will be featured this week on The Weather Channel as part of the network’s “Heat Week” shows. As part of “Heat Week,” the network—which airs on channel 58.1 on campus—highlights jobs and activities that take place outside during the hottest part of the year.

Notes for Julian Family Accepted at Band Office

Condolence cards or notes for WJ Julian’s family are being accepted at the band office, and donations in his memory can be made to the University of Tennessee Band Scholarship Fund.
