Pregame Showcase to Feature Scientific Computing Expert

Before the Vols’ football game against Vanderbilt on Saturday, fans can learn about the past, present, and future of scientific computing at the College of Arts and Sciences Pregame Showcase. Steven Wise, associate professor of mathematics, will discuss the evolution of scientific computing and look at the challenges that lie ahead beginning at 5:00 p.m. in the UC Ballroom. This is the final Pregame Showcase of the season.

Shefner to Talk about Austerity Policies at Pregame Showcase

Football fans can learn more about austerity policies before the Vols vs. Tigers football game on Saturday at the College of Arts and Science Pregame Showcase. Jon Shefner, head of the Department of Sociology, will present “Making the Cuts: Austerity Policies and Their Social Implications,” explaining the effects of spending cuts, tax hikes, and other measures governments use during adverse economic conditions.

Pregame Showcase Features Expert on Ghosts in Buddhism

Before the Vols vs. Gamecocks football game on Saturday, fans are invited to hear some pre-Halloween ghost stories from Thailand, as part of the College of Arts and Science Pregame Showcase. “Haunted Bangkok: Angry Spirits, Buddhist Power, and Popular Media in Thailand,” features Rachelle Scott, associate professor of religious studies. The showcase kicks off at 10:01 a.m. in the University Center Ballroom.

Dean Theresa Lee to Discuss Sleep Habits at Pregame Showcase

Having trouble catching Zs? Wide-awake football fans are invited to learn all about sleep patterns at this week’s Pregame Showcase prior to the Vols game against the University of Georgia on Saturday, October, 5. Theresa Lee, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and a biopsychologist, will discuss how sleep patterns vary through life and explain what is considered normal. The showcase will be held at 1:30 p.m. in the Carolyn P. Brown University Center Ballroom.

New Human Rights Program Research Featured at Pregame Showcase

Before heading into Neyland Stadium to watch the Vols vs. South Alabama football game on Saturday, fans are invited to the Pregame Showcase to learn how faculty and students are exploring the causes, contexts, and consequences of contemporary crises. Tricia Hepner, associate professor of anthropology and co-director of the college’s new Disasters, Displacement, and Human Rights program, will present “Anthropology as a Tool for Improving the Human Condition.”

Pregame Showcase Looks at Star Dust and Atom Smashers

Before watching the Vols vs. Western Kentucky football game this Saturday, gridiron fans can enjoy a little intellectual scrimmage at UT’s Pregame Showcase. Kate Jones, associate professor of physics and astronomy, will talk about “Star Dust and Atom Smashers.” Beginning at 10:21 a.m. in the University Center Ballroom, Jones will explain how the atomic nucleus—despite being less than a thousandth of the size of an atom—leaves its fingerprints on the chemical composition of the solar system.

Pregame Showcase Kicks Off Twenty-fourth Season with Wide-Ranging Topics

It’s football time in Tennessee—and that means it’s also time for the College of Arts and Sciences Pregame Showcase. Now in its twenty-fourth season, the Pregame Showcase gives fans the chance to hear from esteemed faculty prior to each gridiron matchup. This year’s first showcase will be held at 4:00 p.m. this Saturday. Derek Alderman, professor and head of the geography department, will discuss “What’s In a Name? The ‘Place Politics’ of Streets Named for Martin Luther King Jr.”

Professor of history Jay Rubenstein will talk about the First Crusade and its relevance to today’s world in his presentation at this year’s final Pregame Showcase. It happens prior to November 24 football game where the Vols will play Kentucky. His presentation is entitled “Armies of Heaven: The First Crusade and the Quest for Apocalypse,” which is also the title of his latest book.

Microbiology professor Steven Wilhelm will talk about water quality at Saturday’s Pregame Showcase, prior to the Vols football game against Missouri. His presentation, “Protecting Our Water Resources: A Microbiologist’s Perspective,” will examine the world’s declining water quality. It begins at 10:21 a.m. in the Carolyn P. Brown Memorial University Center.
