The university’s Nourish International chapter is raising funds for its summer 2014 project abroad. The group will be traveling to Guatemala City and hopes to raise its budget of $1,000 by February 26. Nourish International is a nonprofit organization across forty-five campuses nationwide, engaging students in partnerships with small communities abroad and helping them invest in sustainable change to end poverty.

Their desire to help combat extreme poverty has led Nourish International members from UT to Uganda and Peru. This summer, it’s taking them to Guatemala. The group, which left today, will spend six weeks working with the Guatemalan organization Unidas para Vivir Mejor, which seeks to empower the women of Guatemala through programs including education, employment opportunities, day care, and health care services. The organization’s name translates to “United for Better Living.”
Jennifer Smith, leader of UT Knoxville’s Nourish International chapter, traveled to Uganda last summer with a team of students to help an African school plant a garden to provide an ongoing source of food for its students. This year, Smith and her Nourish colleagues are at it again—with their sights set on Peru.
