UT Symphony’s Academic Premiere of “Knoxville: Summer of 2015” is October 30

The UT Symphony Orchestra will present the academic premiere of Knoxville: Summer of 2015, a musical sequel to Samuel Barber’s famous Knoxville: Summer of 1915, on Friday, October 30, at the Tennessee Theatre in downtown Knoxville. The concert is a collaboration of the School of Music and the Department of Theatre.

The UT Symphony Orchestra is poised to present the academic premiere of Knoxville: Summer of 2015, a musical sequel to Samuel Barber’s famous Knoxville: Summer of 1915, which featured lyrics borrowed from James Agee’s poem of a similar name. The concert will be presented at 7:30 p.m. October 30 at the Tennessee Theater.

UT Legendary Marching Band Director WJ Julian Passes Away

WJ Julian, one of the most innovative leaders of the UT Pride of the Southland Band, passed away peacefully Tuesday afternoon surrounded by his family. He was ninety-two. Julian led the band for more than thirty years. He was dedicated to a standard of excellence that became a trademark of the band during numerous presidential inaugurations and bowl game appearances. The band’s performance has become legendary in Knoxville and throughout the world of college football.

Music Building Receives LEED Certification

The Natalie L. Haslam Music Center is officially one of UT’s greenest buildings. The building recently became LEED certified—at the silver level—by the U.S. Green Building Council and verified by the Green Building Certification Building Institute.

UT has ‘no plans’ for new band director search

The News Sentinel recently highlighted the Pride of the Southland Band and its preparations ahead of this fall’s football season. The band will march under Interim Director Don Ryder.
