Manning and Pharr Face off in UT Commercial

Two great strategic minds go toe-to-toe in the university’s latest TV commercial. In the spot, UT scientist George Pharr squares off against Vol For Life Peyton Manning, quarterback for the Denver Broncos. Their chosen battlefield: a game of chess. The spot will air during most televised Tennessee sporting events. Broadcast networks allot thirty seconds of free promotion time for each school during games.

The energy of the university is on full display in the work and accomplishments of former Lady Vol and academic all-American Candace Parker and current Governor’s Chair for Power Electronics Yilu Liu. This energy is brought to light in UT’s new TV commercial. The spot will air during most televised Tennessee sporting events.

UT Photo Director’s Work on a Winning Streak

"Long Room"

The photography work of Tom Owens, the longtime director of the Video and Photography Center, has captured the attention of several art aficionados lately. Two of his photographs recently won in the Arts & Culture Alliance National Juried Exhibition. About forty pieces were chosen from more than 350 entries. Several of his photographs can now be seen around Knoxville from the “Arts in the Airport” exhibit to the Mayors’ Show in the City County Building downtown.

From science stars to baseball starters, the university’s latest TV commercial shines a light on the talent and opportunities that abound on Rocky Top. Harry “Hap” McSween, Distinguished Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences, is a leading expert on the composition of Mars and meteorites. R.A. Dickey, former Vol baseball player and current pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays, won the 2012 National League Cy Young Award.

What goes into shooting a thirty second TV spot? One-hundred eighty hours. Created by UT’s Department of Video and Photography, the long hours can be attributed to the breadth of content weaved together into just a half a minute. Viewers will notice running themes of orange, talented alumni, the impact of their big ideas, and the impact of UT. The spot debuts this Friday with the start of the Volunteer football season on ESPNU during the North Carolina State game.
