John Currie, athletic director for Kansas State, has been named UT’s next Director of Athletics. Currie worked for UT Athletics for 12 years prior to going to K-State in 2009. He will join Chancellor Beverly Davenport’s cabinet as vice chancellor and director of athletics on April 1. Davenport announced the hire Tuesday after less than two weeks on the job.
One of Beverly Davenport’s first meetings on her first day was with student reporters of the Daily Beacon newspaper—an indicator of what she considers a top priority as the new UT Knoxville chancellor. “I love seeing the students, because they are really why we are here,” she said. “The students will lead us—their inspiration, their energy, and their enthusiasm. Beverly Davenport began work Wednesday as UT’s eighth chancellor. She spoke to the Daily Beacon and then later answered questions from local media outlets at Tyson Alumni Center.

UT intends to award a contract to Turnkey Sports and Entertainment to assist Chancellor-Elect Beverly Davenport in the search for the university’s next director of athletics.
The UT Board of Trustees approved Beverly Davenport to become the eighth chancellor of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She will begin on February 15. The board met in a special called meeting Thursday in Nashville. Davenport is the first woman to lead UT Knoxville and the second woman chancellor in UT System history.
