This Week’s Science Forum to Look at Alternative Transportation Issues

This week’s Science Forum at UT will look at alternative transportation energy sources and innovations. Claus Daniel, deputy director of the Sustainable Transportation program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, will talk on “Electrification of Transportation: Cost and Opportunities.” His discussion begins at noon on Friday, September 19, in Room C-D of Thompson-Boling Arena.

Student at Bredesen Center Wins $50,000 ORNL Prize

With the first set of UT Bredesen Center graduates set to receive their doctorates next week, students who will be in the next wave of graduates are already finding success. Andrew Lepore, working out of the Materials Science and Technology Division through the center, recently won a prestigious ORNL-related prize at the Next Big Idea competition. Lepore is on track to receive his doctorate in 2016.

From extreme drought to super storms, many wonder what the future holds for the climate of the eastern United States. A study conducted by researchers at UT does away with the guessing. Results show the region will be hotter and wetter. Joshua Fu, a civil and environmental engineering professor, and Yang Gao, a graduate research assistant, developed precise scales of cities which act as a climate crystal ball seeing high resolution climate changes almost fifty years into the future.

News Sentinel: STEM Leadership Academy offering science teaching tips

The Knoxville News Sentinel featured a statewide middle school teacher professional development workshop called Tennessee STEM Leadership Academy. Tennessee Solar Conversion and Storage Using Outreach, Research, and Education (TN-SCORE) played a role in the academy through funding.
