Professors to Debut Film Honoring Pat Summitt’s International Legacy

Two UT professors will debut their film Pat: A Legacy of Love at 7 p.m. Thursday, September 7, at the Bijou Theatre. Doors open at 6 p.m. Sarah Hillyer, director of UT’s Center for Sport, Peace, and Society, and Ashleigh Huffman, associate director of the center, have spent the last three years producing the film dedicated to the late Pat Summitt, which features her role in rebuilding women’s basketball in Iraq.

Student-Athletes Launch Sports Fest for Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities

UT student-athletes will partner with campus and local community organizations from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 30, to present the first-ever UT Sports Fest, an event to promote inclusion of persons with disabilities in sports. The free event will be held at the Robert E. White Indoor Field in UT’s Anderson Training Center.

In Memoriam: Joy DeSensi

Joy DeSensi, UT Chancellor’s Professor Emerita and longtime scholar and practitioner in the field of sport management, passed away April 1, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 71.

UT, US State Department Partnership Among 2013’s Top Diplomacy Efforts

A partnership between UT and the US Department of State to engage women and girls from around the world through sports was named one of the nation’s ten best public diplomacy efforts of 2013. UT’s Center for Sport, Peace, and Society partners with the Department of State and espnW Global Sports Mentoring Program to implement the Empowering Women and Girls through Sports initiative.

Senegalese Basketball Delegation Visits UT

A Senegalese basketball delegation arrived at UT last week as part of the US Department of State’s global effort to engage women and girls through sports. The Center for Sport, Peace, and Society will host the twelve female basketball players and two coaches until February 1 through the Empowering Women and Girls through Sports Initiative, a global effort established by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

‘We Back Pat in Iraq’ Documentary on Pat Summitt to Release this Spring

Support for legendary coach Pat Summitt has gone international. She will be honored at this Sunday’s Lady Vols basketball game with a special video message from her biggest fans in Iraq. The video is the trailer for We Back Pat in Iraq, a full-length documentary about Summitt’s impact on girls and women in the Middle Eastern country. UT partner Sport 4 Peace is producing the film. It is scheduled for release this spring.
