UT-ORNL: Small Nanoparticles Have Surprisingly Big Effects on Polymer Nanocomposites

Polymer nanocomposites mix particles billionths of a meter (nanometers, nm) in diameter with polymers, which are long molecular chains. Often used to make injection-molded products, they are common in automobiles, fire retardants, packaging materials, drug-delivery systems, medical devices, coatings, adhesives, sensors, membranes and consumer goods. When a team of scientists, including UT’s Alexei Sokolov, tried to verify

Research Highlighted by American Physical Society

A piece by Jeremy Smith, UT-ORNL Governor’s Chair for Molecular Biophysics, and Alexei Sokolov, Governor’s Chair for Polymer Science, is currently the spotlight on the American Physical Society’s Physics page. Entitled “Elastic and Conformational Softness of a Globula Protein,” the piece examines certain protein behaviors such as why protein flexibility sometimes increases dramatically with temperature.

Seven Faculty Named AAAS Fellows

From cave art to clean water to nuclear security, UT faculty are being recognized for their teaching and research in a variety of disciplines. Seven professors have been named by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) to their 2012 class of fellows.
