Instructor Evaluations Begin Today

Last fall, the university converted the way students evaluate their instructors to a completely web-based, online system. This semester’s evaluation period opens this afternoon and runs through April 30. “The results in the fall were a good sign of progress,” Provost Susan Martin said. “The previous, all-paper system response rate was higher, so there’s room for improvement. But we’re certainly headed in the right direction.”

Brown Bag Lecture Series Focuses on Environmental Issues

As part of the campus’s Earth Month celebration, the Office of Sustainability is hosting a ‘brown bag’ lecture series at lunchtime each day this week. Employees and students are invited to bring their lunches to these entertaining and educational sustainability-themed lectures, which run from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. in the Carolyn P. Brown University Center.

Spring Cleanup Begins April 16

In an effort to declutter academic buildings, a campus-wide spring-cleaning effort will begin April 16. Campus departments should use the Spring Cleanup as an opportunity to get rid of surplus equipment, used furniture, trash, and recyclables. Provost Susan Martin and Interim Vice Chancellor of Research Lee Riedinger are asking departments to make the Spring Cleanup a priority, and special resources are being dedicated to making it easier to move property out of campus buildings.

The Spring Clean-up aims to improve the look of our campus and to enhance safety by decluttering hallways and other spaces. The clean-up effort begins April 16. Below is the complete schedule for the Spring Clean-up.

Hodges Library Commons to Undergo Major Renovation

The Commons in Hodges Library will undergo a major renovation this spring. Renovations will begin immediately following this semester’s final exams and continue for several months. The pay-off for some temporary inconvenience will be an updated facility that improves the Studio and provides more group study spaces, more natural light, and better organized services.

‘Dead Man’s Cell Phone’ Premieres Tonight

Dead Man’s Cell Phone opens at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Clarence Brown Theatre. The play tells the story of a woman who impulsively answers a ringing cell phone when its owner is unable to do so. She is then forced to confront her own moral assumptions and her own need for human connection in a technological world. Watch the video for a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the play.

UT Chef Wins Gold With ‘Deconstructed Bacon Cheeseburger’

With a unique twist on a national favorite dish, UT Chef Jason Timmons brought home gold from the ARAMARK Culinary Excellence Challenge, held last week at the University of South Alabama. Timmons beat out the competition with his entrée, a “Deconstructed Bacon Cheeseburger en Croute,” and his dessert, an “Inside Out Pineapple Upside Down Cake.” At 11:00 a.m. today, UT will host the final South Region ACE Competition at Presidential Court Café. Attendees can sample the food made by competing chefs.

Update on McClung Tower Repair Work

Consulting engineers have determined that exterior repair work is needed on all four corners of McClung Tower, according to Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities Services Dave Irvin. Workers discovered last month that a large section of concrete had separated from the bottom of McClung Tower’s second floor, on the west side of the building. The area will remain cordoned off as the university works to bid the job, which will be classified as an emergency repair.

‘Construction Party’ to Remind Campus that UC Eateries, Stores Are Still Open

Although construction is now under way on a new Student Union, restaurants and stores are still open for business inside the Carolyn P. Brown University Center. To remind the campus community of all the University Center amenities, a “construction fair” will take place from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on March 28, outside the Cumberland Avenue entrance of the UC. Attendees are invited to enjoy free food, drinks, and giveaway items from a variety of entities.
