Here are some of the faculty, staff, and students honored by outside organizations in recent months:
Campus
The campus has received a Green Power Leadership Award from the US Environmental Protection Agency. Already named the top consumer of green power in academia, UT is the only school in the Southeast to win the award.
The UT chapter of the Society of Women Engineers was awarded the SWE Mission Award Silver. Mission Awards recognize SWE groups that embody the organization’s core values and demonstrate continuous improvement and growth toward strategic goals.
UT’s Stormwater Management Office has been recognized as Organization of the Year by the Tennessee Stormwater Association. Selected from more than 100 organizations, UT was honored for its efforts to incorporate effective and inventive stormwater management strategies into every construction project on campus.
WUOT, the public radio station licensed to UT, has received its first international award, for its TruckBeat project. The work was honored with the top award in topical reporting in the small newsroom category in a contest sponsored by the Online News Association Conference, the world’s largest association of digital journalists.
Faculty
Suresh Babu, UT–Oak Ridge National Laboratory Governor’s Chair for Advanced Manufacturing, received the 2017 Comfort A. Adams Lecture Award last week at Fab Tech 2017. This prestigious award from the American Welding Society is considered a lifetime achievement award and is given to a scientist or engineer who has brought new ideas to the field.
Chad Duty, an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering, is part of the Tru-Design Team, which received an R&D 100 award at the 55th Annual R&D 100 awards ceremony. The team was honored for its large-format additive coating solutions developed for large-scale printed parts for both high- and low-temperature applications. The coating solutions were used on the Boeing 3D printed trim tool that set a Guinness World Record last year.
Hash Hashemian, an adjunct professor in the Department of Nuclear Engineering, has been named a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for his exceptional leadership in developing technologies for nuclear reactor monitoring.
Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Associate Professor Husheng Li and graduate student student Yawen Fan received the best paper award at the IEEE Global Communications Conference (Globecom) 2017.
John C. Stier, associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, has been inducted into the American Society of Agronomy’s 2017 Class of Fellows.
Brian Wirth, UT-ORNL Governor’s Chair for Computational Nuclear Engineering, has been named a fellow of the American Nuclear Society, the group’s highest honor.
Staff
Jennifer Pierce, who oversees the Panhellenic Council as an assistant director in the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life, has received the 2017 Outstanding Panhellenic Advisor Award from the National Panhellenic Conference.
Students
Three master’s degree students from the UT Space Institute, part of the Tickle College of Engineering—Adam J. Harris, of Clarksville, Tennessee; Brian D. Kocher, of Tullahoma, Tennessee; and Theron J. Price, of Morristown, Tennessee—won awards at the AIAA Young Professionals Symposium, hosted by the University of Alabama in Huntsville in October.
Three teams of students from the School of Journalism and Electronic Media received prizes for their films from the College Media Association’s Film Fest: Seniors Tim Morris and Isaac Fowler won first place in the Short Documentary category for Welcome Home Brother (Land Grant Films Vietnam project); Isaac Ward, a senior, and recent graduate Katie Overton won third place in the Short Documentary category for Never Giving Up (produced for a documentary production class); and junior Abby Bower and senior Brock Zych won second place in the Feature Video category for Meet Knoxville’s Backyard Boat Builders (Land Grant Films micro doc).
Jasmine Worlds, a senior in mechanical engineering, is the 2017 recipient of the Student Leadership Award from the Career Communication Group of the Women of Color STEM Conference. She was honored for her work in engineering and her commitment to volunteering outside the classroom.
