Dongarra Discusses Next Wave of Supercomputers with Nature

UT Distinguished Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Jack Dongarra, Director of the Innovative Computing Laboratory, is considered one of the leading experts in the world when it comes to supercomputing and understanding the speed of machines.

Dongarra, who helps develop the annual list of the world’s fastest computers, recently spoke to Nature, the International Journal of Science, about the coming surge in supercomputing.

With the focus being solely on speed in a lot of cases, Dongarra cautioned that speed isn’t everything.

Using the example of a car, he pointed out that the speedometer’s highest limit or the car’s top speed might be eye-catching, but what matters is how it performs in everyday, normal use.

Dongarra also discussed China’s efforts in supercomputing, now that the country has become a major player in the field.
