The Center for Transportation Research is celebrating its 45th anniversary with a day of events highlighting its history as well as a panel discussion from state officials representing the Tennessee Department of Transportation, Department of Safety and Homeland Security, and Department of Health.
The campus community is invited to attend the event from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, November 1, on the fourth floor of the UT Conference Center, 600 Henley Street.
The Center for Transportation Research was founded at UT in 1972 as a way to bring together leading minds to tackle issues related to transportation, ranging from safety and security to teaching best methods.
Since then, the CTR has become a major player in transportation research, with its experts having been called upon by Congress to testify about transport-related topics and by media such as the Associated Press, National Public Radio, CNN, the New York Times and NBC News in the wake of transportation incidents.
In honor of its 45th anniversary, state officials representing homeland security, transportation, health and education will join faculty from the center and the Tickle College of Engineering—where it is housed—for discussions and Q&A sessions on the history of the center and how it can continue to serve the university and the world in the future.
The CTR will also introduce its faculty fellows for 2017-18:

- Research Assistant Professor in Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering and EcoCAR Faculty Advisor Butch Irick
- Assistant Professor of Marketing and Supply Chain Management Lance Saunders
- Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture Brad Collett
- Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Charles Cao
Students will present posters on current projects, highlighting the CTR’s importance for the future, with a reception to follow.
