Shih-Lung Shaw has been appointed interim associate provost and director of the Center for International Education (CIE) effective October 15. He takes over for Pia Wood, who is leaving to become vice provost and dean of international affairs at the University of North Texas.

A professor of geography, Shaw has been at UT since 1998. He served as head of the Department of Geography from 2007 to 2010. He currently holds the Alvin and Sally Beaman Professorship and the Arts and Sciences Excellence Professorship.

Shaw has served as director of UT’s Confucius Institute since it started in 2012 and will continue in that role while serving in this new capacity.

“Shih-Lung Shaw has been active in many aspects of international education on our campus for years and will be able to keep the CIE moving forward as we search for a permanent director,” Interim Provost John Zomchick said.

A committee to search for a permanent CIE director will be formed soon with the goal of having a new director in place by the end of the academic year.

The CIE leads, coordinates, and supports the university’s strategies for global education, research, and engagement. It develops and manages international partnerships, welcomes and assists international students and scholars, provides study abroad opportunities for our students, and creates international and intercultural programming for the campus and broader community.

The CIE has seven major units: Confucius Institute, English Language Institute, International House, International Students and Scholar ServicesOffice of International Partnerships and ExchangesOffice of the Peace Corps, and Programs Abroad Office
