UT maintained its ranking of 46th among all public universities in the 2018 U.S. News and World Report undergraduate rankings released Tuesday, September 12.
UT is ranked 103rd in the new National Universities list, which includes public and private universities that emphasize research and offer a full range of undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs.
The university saw improvement in several metrics, including the reputation score from its peer institutions and the percentage of smaller classes.
UT’s reputation score rose to 3.2 on a 5-point scale. Peer scores are part of the overall reputation score, which accounts for 22.5 percent of a school’s overall ranking. The percentage of classes with 20 or fewer students rose to 30, and the percentage of classes with 50 or more students dropped to 13.
Chancellor Beverly Davenport said she is pleased with the improvements in key metrics, which show steady progress among a competitive field of public and private universities.
“The U.S. News rankings recognize our commitment to student success and faculty excellence,” Davenport said. “They demonstrate that our peers see us as a national university of distinction. I am proud of the positive direction we are heading, the incredible work of our faculty and the impact UT has on our students and our state.”
The Haslam College of Business climbed three spots this year and is now ranked 27th among all public universities and 45th in the nation. The college’s undergraduate supply chain management program retained its strong position as third in the nation.
“We continuously strive to bring greater value to our students through our teaching, research and engagement activities,” said Steven L. Mangum, dean of the Haslam College of Business and Stokely Foundation Leadership Chair. “Rankings such as this are one indication of progress being made toward better serving our constituents and fulfilling our college mission.”
The Tickle College of Engineering’s undergraduate program is ranked 34th among public schools and 61st nationally.
U.S. News ranked UT 35th among public schools in its Best Colleges for Veterans list, recognizing UT’s strong support for veterans and their families.
UT tied with four public universities—Auburn University, the University of New Hampshire, the University of Oregon, and the University of South Carolina—and two private universities—the Illinois Institute of Technology and Loyola University of Chicago.
The rankings released Tuesday, September 12, are based on data gathered in the spring and summer of 2017 on a variety of undergraduate metrics including student retention and graduation, peer and high school counselor assessments, resources available to faculty, selectivity in student admissions, and alumni giving rates.
