WATE Speaks With Hathaway About Hurricane Harvey

Jon Hathaway

WATE, Knoxville’s ABC affiliate, recently spoke with storm water and flooding expert Jon Hathaway about the events in Texas and Louisiana and what can be expected after the storm moves on through the U.S.

Hathaway, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at UT, talked to the station about how urban planning has replaced some natural impediments to flooding, such as turning wetlands into roads and parking lots.

He he also discussed how health and safety concerns will linger longer after the storm has left.

Hurricane Harvey has dumped more than 50 inches of rain on parts of Texas, an amount that Hathaway said no level of urban planning could stop, but that some of the issues and damage could have been limited.
