WUOT, the public radio station licensed to UT, has won two Edward R. Murrow Regional Awards for Excellence in Writing and New Series for their 2016 series Five Guns.
Produced by former WUOT Director of News Content and Executive Producer Matt Shafer Powell and producer Leslie Snow, Five Guns tells the story of five guns and their impact on the lives of five East Tennessee residents. The series, which ran the week of November 28, 2016, looks at how guns are seen as deadly instrumnets by some and a means of protection by others.
One story in the series delves into the mind of Gary Seale. Seale was a teacher at Campbell County High School in 2005 when he was shot with a .22 handgun by one of his students. Today he is still trying to make sense of the tragedy. Other stories in the series feature a squirrel hunter, a war veteran, and others. You can listen to Five Guns on WUOT 91.9 FM’s website.
The Edward R. Murrow Awards are presented by the Radio Television Digital News Association and have honored outstanding achievements in electronic journalism since 1971. Stations earning regional awards will automatically advance to the national competition. Winners of the national competition will be announced in June.
