UT’s McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture is partnering with the UT Center for the Study of War and Society to host a First Friday open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, April 7.
The open house is in honor of the World War I centenary and will focus on WWI objects in the museum’s collections. The open house is meant to give UT staff, faculty, and students, as well as museum members, a special behind-the-scenes peek at gems from the McClung Museum’s collections.
The open house is a casual, and the UT community and museum members are invited to drop in for a visit and conversation about the varied objects in the museum’s collection and how the collections can be used in teaching and research. Academic programs at the McClung seek to make the collections and exhibitions as accessible as possible to the university community and to facilitate experiential learning through object-based teaching.
Museum staff and scholars from the Center for the Study of War and Society will be on hand to handle objects, facilitate conversation and take suggestions about what objects should be pulled for future open houses.
Registration is not needed; simply meet museum staff in the museum’s object study room, Room 53, located in the suite of offices by the auditorium on the museum’s lower floor.
On the first Friday of every month, galleries and arts organizations around Knoxville open their doors to feature a variety of artists’ displays and live music. Visit First Friday Knoxville’s website for more information regarding the monthly event.
The McClung Museum is located at 1327 Circle Park Drive. Museum admission is free, and the museum’s hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Free two-hour museum parking passes are available from the parking kiosk at the entrance to Circle Park Drive during the week. Free parking is available on the weekends. Free public transportation to the museum is available via the Knoxville Trolley Vol Line.
