Dave Clarke, director of UT’s Center for Transportation Research, has become one of the most sought-after experts in rail safety in the United States.

The most recent example of people turning to him for explanation came this week after a tour bus was struck by a train in Biloxi, Mississippi, killing four and injuring others.

Clarke, who also serves as a Research Associate Professor in the Tickle College of Engineering’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has particular insight on rail crossings, which he addressed with the Associated Press.

“Almost every accident like this could be avoided,” said Clarke. “But we still keep having rail crossing collisions.”

Clarke has previously helped the AP, NBC News, CNN and other major outlets in discussing what went wrong at rail crossings, having noted that the technology is there to reduce accidents, but the cost is keeping some cities from using it.
