Scott Kelly’s Year-Long Mission Changed Him at Genetic Level

The first full report on astronaut Scott Kelly’s year in space was recently released by NASA, with some startling conclusions. 

Kelly, a graduate of the UT Space Institute, spent a year aboard the International Space Station while his twin brother, Mark, stayed on Earth. UTSI is a part of UT’s Tickle College of Engineering.

While differences in gravity were already shown to changes Scott Kelly’s phys

ical anatomy—he stretched out by a number of inches, for example—one major change was wholly unexpected. 

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reports that Scott Kelly’s body underwent changes at a genetic level, something that had not been anticipated.
