UT School of Art Professor Jered Sprecher will showcase his recent contemporary art exhibition, Outside In, at the Knoxville Museum of Art from Friday, January 27, through April 16, 2017.
Sprecher, professor in painting and drawing, joined UT in 2005 and has had solo exhibitions at galleries in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and other large cities. His work is influenced by the “debris of visual culture” that is seen in our culture every day.
A self-described “hunter and gatherer,” Sprecher pulls his imagery from disparate sources such as wallpaper, graffiti, architecture, cut gemstones, and X-rays. He captures the little moments in life that are constantly changing and turns them into pieces created from a variety of processes.
Outside In is inspired by the traditional art seen in many domestic living rooms. Sprecher’s paintings include abstractions of nature that traditionally appear in this type of decorative art. The exhibition consists of suspended canvases that serve to separate the space into different rooms. In its entirety, the installation allows visitors to experience the exhibition in a more intimate environment.
The exhibition is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and Emerson Process Management.
The Knoxville Museum of Art is in downtown Knoxville at 1050 World’s Fair Park and is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 1–5 p.m. Sunday. Admission and parking are free.
