The bottom of the ocean is one of the most mysterious places on the planet, prompting Karen Lloyd, an assistant professor in the Department of Microbiology, to dig past the sea floor. In 2010, Lloyd was a postdoc at Aarhus University in Denmark, and sought to explore what microbes were living more than 400 feet beneath the sea floor.

PBS recently featured Lloyd’s research in the story The Never Ending Quest to Rewrite the Tree of Life.
