Alan Viard, economist and resident scholar with the American Enterprise Institute, will speak at UT’s Knoxville Economics Forum, Friday, Oct. 28, 2016, at Club LeConte.

Alan Viard, a nationally recognized economist and resident scholar with the American Enterprise Institute, will be the guest speaker at the Knoxville Economics Forum Friday, October 28. His speech, “The Business Tax Reform Debate: The 2016 Election and Beyond,” will address business tax reform as it relates to the 2016 election.

Reservations are being accepted now for the event, which is sponsored by the Department of Economics in UT’s Haslam College of Business. The program will be held at Club LeConte, atop the First Tennessee Building, 800 South Gay Street.

Breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m. followed by the program at 8 a.m. Cost is $20, payable on the day of the event (cash or check only). Space is limited and reservations must be made online.

“This is a great opportunity for the university and broader community to learn more about the business tax policies of the presidential candidates,” said Matt Murray, professor of economics and associate director of UT’s Boyd Center for Business and Economic Research. “The forum is a platform for serious discussions on economic policy matters as they relate to East Tennessee.”

At AEI, Viard focuses on federal tax and budget policy. He has taught public finance at Georgetown University’s Public Policy Institute and cohosted the New York University Law School tax policy colloquium in 2015.

Prior to joining AEI, Viard was a senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and an assistant professor of economics at The Ohio State University. He has been a visiting scholar at the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Tax Analysis, a senior economist at the White House’s Council of Economic Advisers, and a staff economist at the Joint Committee on Taxation of the US Congress.

His work has been featured in the New York Times, The Atlantic, Bloomberg, NPR’s Planet Money, and The Hill.

Earlier in his career Viard spent time in Japan as a visiting scholar at Osaka University’s Institute of Social and Economic Research. Viard received his PhD in economics from Harvard University and a bachelor’s in economics from Yale University.

The Knoxville Economics Forum was chartered in 2010 as a civic group dedicated to the nonpartisan exchange of ideas on economic policy matters, and was launched as an outreach mission by UT’s economics department.
