East Tennessee high school teachers, guidance counselors, and other education professionals are invited to learn ways they can better prepare students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields for the rigors of college life during Big Orange STEM Saturday for Educators on October 22.
The free half-day event is hosted by UT Libraries and will be held at UT’s John C. Hodges Library, 1015 Volunteer Boulevard.
Stan Guffey, faculty scholar at UT’s Tennessee Teaching and Learning Center, will present the keynote address on preparing high school students for the transition to the very different learning environment they will encounter at the university.
Breakout sessions will include:
- A discussion about the path to cutting-edge professions in the engineering field. College of Engineering student ambassadors will relate their personal experiences with study abroad, internships, co-ops, and research assistantships.
- A look at digital humanities projects that partner students and faculty in the sciences with those in the arts and humanities to create innovative, relevant, and exciting projects.
- Ideas about how to help STEM students navigate the path from the classroom to the workforce.
- A review of skills that STEM majors will need to be successful in college math courses and the relevance of mathematical skills to other STEM areas.
Exhibitors will include representatives of the various STEM curricula at UT as well as university programs that foster student success, such as VolsTeach, a teacher preparation program for undergraduates in STEM fields, and RISER (Research and Instructional Strategies for Engineering Retention), which targets freshman engineering students who need to boost their math skills.
