James Zogby, an expert on the Middle East and adviser to former presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders, will speak at UT’s Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy on Tuesday, October 11.

Zogby will deliver the Distinguished Global Security Lecture at 5:30 p.m. in the Toyota Auditorium of the Baker Center. The title of his talk is “The US and the Middle East: How We Got into This Mess and What We Can Do about It.”

The event is free and open to the public. Public parking is available for $2 an hour in Volunteer Hall Garage.

Zogby will discuss his expertise in the global security crisis in the Middle East as well as his work at the Arab American Institute, which he co-founded in 1985. AAI is a nonprofit, nonpartisan national leadership organization that promotes civic and political engagement of Arab Americans in the United States.

Zogby is a member of the executive committee of the Democratic National Committee and was appointed by President Barack Obama to the US Commission on International Religious Freedom in 2013. In addition to writing a weekly column published in 16 countries, he is the creator and host of the award-winning call-in political television show Viewpoint. He is frequently featured on national and international media.

In 2010, Zogby published Arab Voices. His 2013 e-book, Looking at Iran: “The Rise and Fall of Iran in Arab Public Opinion,” is drawn from his extensive polling across the Middle East with Zogby Research Services.

Zogby earned his doctorate from Temple University and attended Princeton University as a National Endowment for the Humanities post doctoral fellow.
