Members of the Society of Professional Journalists have elected Rachel Wedding McClelland, director of the Office of Student Media, to serve on the organization’s national board.

McClelland was sworn in Tuesday after a record-setting election turnout of its nearly ten thousand members. She was one of four candidates vying for the national at-large director seat and won 46 percent of the votes cast.

In her work at UT, McClelland oversees a team of professionals and students who produce the Daily Beacon student newspaper, the Phoenix literary magazine, and utdailybeacon.com. She has been at UT since May 2014 after holding a similar position at Indiana State University. McClelland also serves on the national board of the College Media Association.

The Society of Professional Journalists’ membership includes broadcast, print, and online journalists; journalism educators; and students interested in journalism careers. The organization advocates for open government, promotes ethical journalistic practice, trains and educates journalists, and honors students and professionals who undertake exemplary work.
