UT’s College of Architecture and Design kicks off its 2016–2017 Robert B. Church Memorial Lecture Series Monday, September 26, with lecturer Paul Mankins, founding partner of substancearchitecture in Des Moines, Iowa.

Mankins will present “Work of substance: r2c2s2p” at 5:30 p.m. in McCarty Auditorium (Room 109) in the Art and Architecture Building.

Free and open to the public, the event will be streamed live. The lecture is co-sponsored by the American Institute of Architects East Tennessee.

Mankins is regarded by the design community as one of the leading design practitioners in the Midwest and has earned more than 100 design awards during the last three decades. He received the American Institute of Architects Young Architects Award in 2003, and in 2004, he was elected to the AIA College of Fellows. In 2011, Mankins was named a Richard Upjohn Fellow of the AIA for his efforts leading the institute.

Mankins has served as chair of the Greater Des Moines Public Art Foundation and as a member of the board of regents for the American Architectural Foundation in Washington, DC. He holds degrees from Iowa State University and Yale University and is the recipient of a research grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Visual Arts.

In addition to the lecture, an exhibit featuring Mankins’ work is on display through October 1 in Gallery 103 in the Art and Architecture Building.

For forty-two years, the College of Architecture and Design has hosted leading architects and design professionals through its Robert B. Church Memorial Lecture Series to enrich the education of its students and elevate the profession in the community. In 2016–2017, more than a dozen professionals from around the world will lecture at the college.
