Acclaimed opera singer Anne Azema is at UT to present a series of master classes, lectures, and voice coaching to students in the College of Arts and Sciences, both in the School of Music and the French program.
Knoxville’s Opera Theatre and the School of Music’s Department of Musicology is sponsoring her visit.
While on campus, Azema—who had a semester-long residency at UT in 2007—will spend much of her time working with opera students who will be in the upcoming performance of Monteverdi’s “Return of Ulysses.” The opera will be presented at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 10, at the Carousel Theatre.
Azema also will teach two master classes instructing students how to best perform pieces which include details specific to the early Baroque era. In addition, she will present lectures to musicology and French students, discussing the “Roman de Fauvel,” a French medieval satirical fable.
“Anne Azema is a musician and scholar of the highest degree,” said Lorraine DiSimone, associate professor of voice. “She is one of the most knowledgeable and experienced performers and educators of Medieval, Renaissance, and Early Baroque performance practice and style in the world today. We are thrilled that she will be with us.”
Azema serves as the artistic director of the Boston Camerata. Born in France, she has performed around the world and has been widely praised for her original, passionate, and vivid approach to songs and texts of the Middle Ages.
