Inside HPC recently put the focus on a study on astrophysical jets that was made possible by help from the UT-led National Institute for Computational Sciences.

Astrophysical jets are the gases that are put forth by black holes, but much about them has remained a mystery since they were first noticed more than forty years ago.

Researchers from the University of California—Berkeley and NICS used the National Science Foundation’s eXtreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) and the Savio computer at Berkeley to conduct simulations and tests on the physics behind the phenomena.

By being able to call upon the ultra-fast computing resources, the team was able to complete 500 hours on 2,000 computer cores, the equivalent of spending a million hours on one computer.
