Office of Communications and Marketing Receives Best of Show from TCPRA

The Office of Communications and Marketing took home eight top-tier honors last week at the 2016 Tennessee College Public Relations Association awards for writing, public relations, design, social media, and video production work, including the Best in Show award for the “Because We’re Vols” video.

“Because We’re Vols” also won gold in the college promotional video category in the electronic and digital media division. The video was produced as part of the campus’s promotion of civility and community.

Other awards include:

  • This year’s rollout of new Big Orange emojis on social media won silver in the social media category. The office created a series of stickers for fans and followers to use on social media and in messaging apps. The Big Orange emoji stickers were shared on our popular social media channels: Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. The web page that hosts the Big Orange emoji stickers remains one of the most-visited pages on Tennessee Today, the campus news site.
  • The Experience Learning campaign won silver in the media relations campaign category. In collaboration with the Office of the Provost, the team designed a communication campaign to raise awareness of the new campus-wide initiative focused on engaged student learning. The campaign incorporated a logo design, a report, a brochure for faculty and staff, a series of newspaper ads, a website, HTML e-mails, an introductory video, and additional fifteen-second videos for social media and media releases.
  • The Big Orange Bus Tour won silver in the special event, seven days or less category. Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek and other key university leaders traveled more than 1,300 miles across the state of Tennessee on the university’s first-ever bus tour in September 2015. The trip included a mix of high school visits, alumni events, and corporate interactions to showcase the state’s flagship institution and its impact on Tennessee. The highlight of the trip was having UT officials deliver admissions acceptance letters to several dozen high school seniors along the way.
  • “On June Twenty-Sixth” won bronze in feature writing. The story from Torchbearer magazine details how two professors and an alumna became part of the historic 2015 Supreme Court ruling requiring all states to recognize same-sex marriages granted in other states. The 2015 Chancellor’s Annual Report won bronze in the reports category. The annual report focuses on the many ways UT is building on the strong traditions of its past. The Make Orange Green Calendar won bronze in the special publications category. Partnered with the Office of Sustainability, the team created a print calendar to build campus awareness and visibility of sustainability programs and resources, to foster green thinking among the campus community, and to promote specific sustainability practices on campus and at home.

The College of Law’s Office of Communications received four awards at the ceremony.
