In Memoriam: Jon Levin

Jon_LevinJon Levin, a gifted teacher and director of the undergraduate physics program, passed away last weekend. He was 63.

Levin, a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, joined UT in 1993.

Though his research focused on experimental atomic physics, Levin dedicated more of his time over the past few years to teaching and directing the department’s undergraduate program, where he was a profound influence on students.

He led an outreach project with Fentress County Schools and in 2010 became the faculty mentor for the UT Society of Physics Students, earning a nomination for the Outstanding Chapter Advisor Award. He also served on numerous college and university committees and as chair of the Undergraduate Council.

Prior to joining UT, Levin was a postdoctoral research associate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and a staff physicist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy has established a scholarship in Levin’s memory. Checks should be made out to the UT Foundation, with a note on the memo line that the gift is for the Jon C. Levin Scholarship. They may be sent to Don Eisenberg, Director of Development, College of Arts and Sciences, 137 Alumni Memorial Building, Knoxville, TN 37996. Gifts may also be given online by entering the Jon C. Levin Scholarship under “other fund.”
